Solnhofen Fish Leptolepides 5 on one slab

Description Nice slab with 5 Jurassic Solnhofen Fossil Fish Leptolepides fot sale. The fossil fish are about 6 to 8 cm or 2.5 to 3 inches long. The limestone slab measures 38×30 cm or 15×11.75 inches. It is an older fossil. Leptolepides sprattiformis is a very common fossil in the Solnhofen area. But these layers, where there is so many of them on the surface, are not quarried anymore. They where called the “Fischli Flinz”. It was just the one layer that contained these mass mortality assemblages and showed up in different locations in closed to Solnhofen. Often the fish appears in pairs. Some believe that the fish died during mating. Experiments showed also that dead fish can assemble in pairs due to water turbulence. Perhaps it might be both since many fish species die after mating and wash up together in large quantities. On the slab are also some coprolites visible, that match the fish. Most Leptolepides don’t show colors and match the Limestone in color.  A common method to highlight the Leptolepides fossils is to use a primer with some coloration added.
